White Pelicans in Wisconsin

We live in Southern Wisconsin on a small kettle lake (17 acres) left by the glaciers when they retreated. We have been fortunate to observe many waterfowl.  One of our greatest observations is when the American White Pelicans pass through for a few days of rest during their northern migration.  We often see two to three dozen birds in front of our home.

The bird is a brilliant white with black flight feathers and a bright orange beak.  It weighs up to 14 pounds and has a wingspan of nice feet.  Their flight seems effortless.  They are a sight to behold as they glide into a landing on water.

American White Pelicans are migratory birds that breed in the Northern Plains/Canada and winter along the Gulf Coast, Mexico, and California. They migrate in large flocks by day during February–March (spring) and September–November (fall), often seen in V-formations. They stop over on rivers and lakes, such as the Mississippi Flyway, to feed (Wikipedia).
